SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
|
Advanced Photography students are working in the darkroom, coating different surfaces with liquid emulsion (what creates the gloss effect on photographs). Coated surfaces may include; tiles, wood, water color paper, or fabric. Students will then project analog film (35 mm) images onto the surfaces and develop the images in the darkroom. Some students may even dye black and white photos another color and transfer that image to the surface they chose. The process, from start to finish, includes taking the photograph, developing it, cleaning the surface each student chose, applying liquid emulsion to the new surface, and then finally transferring the image. Most students used white tiles and also need to put a gel on the tile prior to applying the liquid emulsion. The entire project takes time and patience but students enjoy seeing their photographs on different objects. All level one art classes do not have prerequisites and students may take multiple art classes should they choose.

RHS SPORTS
COACH IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Each month the Rochester Athletic Department highlights a current coach who makes a strong commitment to give our kids the best athletic experience possible. This month’s Coach in the Spotlight is Boys Head Varsity Lacrosse coach Nick Facca. Facca is currently in his fourth overall season as the head coach at Rochester High School. In his first season as the head coach for the Falcons, Facca led Rochester to its highest win total in program history, only to do it again two years later. In year two coach Facca led Rochester to their first ever playoff victory. Coach Facca has had success on the field leading the Falcons, but he takes great pride in the fact that his teams work just as hard in the classroom. This past season his team was named Academic All-State for the third straight year. Facca also volunteers at various youth levels, helping to assist young players in developing while also promoting the sport.
“Coach Facca is an outstanding coach, but even better person”, says Rochester Athletic Director Luke Beach. “Nick is such a high character person, and it shows in the way he runs his program” Beach said. “It would be difficult to find someone who dedicates themselves more to doing things the right way than Nick”, Beach added.

GIRLS GOLF LESSON OPPORTUNITY
Parents, do you have a daughter who you would like to be involved in golf? High school golf is a great sport and often leads youngsters into something they can do the rest of their lives. One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to high school golf is that girls need to have a lot of experience or be good players already in order to come out and make the high school team. Those ideas are definitely misconceptions, especially when it comes to jv girls golf. In a typical year, we will have several players on our jv team with very little experience coming into the season.
When it comes to making the varsity team, although our team won the State Championship this past season, we graduate several good players and, most likely, will take any girl that can break 100 for 18 holes straight to the varsity team this year. In an effort to get girls out playing golf, learning the game and preparing to try out in the fall, we have an opportunity for some inexpensive group lessons with PGA Professional Larry Hamilton through the spring and summer. Larry has his own golf teaching facility in downtown Rochester and also works out of Twin Lakes. This is a great opportunity for young girls (current 5th graders and up) to get some golf instruction without having to commit to the expense of individual lessons yet.
We have some good young players who will be coming up through Rochester High in the next few years and we'd really like to keep building in order to make another State Championship run in the next several years! If you have a daughter who would be interested in attending some group lessons, please contact our Girls Varsity Coach, Jeff Haney, at jhaney@rochester.k12.mi.us. We would like to start lessons within the next few weeks and have them run through the end of the school year. For those who want to continue after that, Larry will also be running lessons throughout the summer as well. Lessons will usually be once a week (if we have enough players, we will possibly have two different time slots each week) and will cost $20. We are very excited about getting young girls involved in the game of golf and hope your daughter can join in.
