Mr. Duffy's Biology classes were using an egg to determine how "cells" react in different environments. They first submerged the egg in vinegar in order to remove the shell and expose the egg's cell membrane. Then the students put the egg in corn syrup and let it sit overnight. They found the egg became deflated. Students then put the egg in distilled water and let it sit overnight. The next day they found that the egg had increased in size. During this process the students were recording their observations and drawings to help them hypothesize as to what is actually happening. As the class starts to talk about cellular transport, the students will then be able to accurately explain what was happening to the egg after being in the different environments.

Rochester Alliance of Theatre Students proudly present Chicago as their Fall musical, November 17-20, 2016. Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, the story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the "celebrity criminal." Nightclub sensation Velma murders her philandering husband, but she's got Chicago's slickest lawyer, Billy Flynn, set to defend her. However, when Roxie Hart also winds up in prison for murder, Billy takes on her case as well -- turning her into a media circus of headlines.  Neither woman will be outdone in their fight against each other and the public for fame and celebrity.  This production is rated PG-13.

Showtimes are as follows: Thursday, Friday & Saturday @7:00pm, Saturday Matinee @2:00pm, Sunday @4:00pm.
Tickets are on sale now!  For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit the R.A.T.S. web page: www.ratstheatre.org

GREEN CLUB RECYCLING EVENT

Picture
The Green Club held an electronic recycling event on Saturday October 15th at RHS. Mr. Shurter sponsored the event with help from students from his AP Environmental Science class, the Green Club, and even a few volunteers from AHS! It was a successful day, as they filled up 12 pallet boxes with electronics that may have otherwise gone into a landfill. The Green Club also fundraised around $300 through the donations of community members that dropped off electronics. Thanks to everyone involved!

RHS GIRLS GOLF WINS STATE CHAMPTIONSHIP

Picture
Rochester High School Girls Golf is good, no I mean really good. Last season was great, this year it has been spectacular. The Falcons finished state runner-up last season, and since that moment, have made it their mission to win the state championship. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Rochester ripped off eleven straight tournament wins, including a regional title that bested all other scores in the state—ever. After the impressive recording setting regional performance, the Falcons proceeded to take an eleven shot lead (310) into the second day of the state championships. If there was any worry, well, lets just say the lead increased the next day. Rochester shot a (308) on the second, to win the state championship by 21 strokes over runner-up Novi.
Seniors Brooke Busse and Veronica Haque both finished in the top eight for the Falcons, with Busse finishing 5th, and Haque 8th. Senior Erika Yang finished with an 84 on the first day, but followed it up with a 79 on the second day. Freshmen Savannah Haque, one of the top freshmen in the state, finished with 79’s on both days for Rochester, while junior Keri Yang was very solid shooting 83’s on both days.

CAPTAINS CLUB VOLUNTEERS AT HAMLIN ELEMENTARY

Picture
Members of the Rochester Athletics Captains Club continue to do good works this fall. The Captains read weekly at Brooklands Elementary and help with academic support, and have also served our board office with a meal this fall. Each week the Captains meet with Athletic Director Luke Beach, and concentrate of building on their already strong leadership skills. As part of their service to our learning community, the Captains also volunteered at Hamlin Elementary the past two weeks, helping with their PE Expo, and providing support to administration and the kids who participated. Captains from the Cross Country and Cheer teams both helped the staff at Hamlin to have a successful after school program. The Captains will conclude their fall with a final meeting this week, and a final visit to Brooklands before the winter Captains get their turn.
Captains Club has now volunteered with the following over the past four years: Habitat for Humanity, Hamlin Elementary, Brooklands Elementary, McGregor Elementary, North Hill Elementary, Blessings in a Back Pack, University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital, The Chad Carr Foundation, Oakland County Sheriffs Office, Wounded Warrior Project, The United State Marines, Guardian Angels Service Dogs, and The Community House.
